Dear Rachel

Your parents sound amazing. Im so sorry you werent able to pursue a career in art, but how wonderful to be doing it now, and, as a fellow 50 year old, yorue still young! Plenty of years of painting ahead of you! I know lots of botanical illustrators who are still wielding their brushes into their late 80s, so there's plenty of time to do some catching up. But yes. I can imagine the "what if"s loom large. And yes, I am incredibly lucky to have had the consistent support of my parents. It meant everything felt possible thanks so much for your comment x

I loved reading this. Sadly both of my parents were artists, one went to the Slade art college and taught art. My mother gave up a place at college as an illustrator as her parents couldnt afford it. We were sadly turned to other careers. I'm 54 and just painting again now and love it. Flowers, plants just wonderous and fascinating.Lizzie I'm so pleased you were so encouraged..wonderful to see the generations. I have some of my mum and dad's work but often wonder"what if?" Thank you for sharing

Hello Lizzie from Washington DC!
We lost touch with your mother Susan a few years back but treasure the collection of her beautiful Christmas cards and the postcards of your work she would proudly enclose. Now reading here in your fascinating family history piece that she has Alzheimer’s I understand why the silence. I am so sorry to hear of it. What you didn’t mention when talking about her work are the many pieces of painted furniture she did. We have 3 pieces - an African inspired table and a small corner “medicine” cupboard she did on spec and we bought from the Windom Place annual sale together with several drawings of Low Row and a treasured watercolor she did of our house here in DC. The other piece of furniture we actually commissioned from your mother was a painted chest of drawers that our daughter Jenny had as a student and now graces her house in Baltimore. I would be happy to send you photos if you would like. Actually I found your fascinating blog because I wanted to know if your family still owns Turnip House as some of our son’s family is going to stay nearby in a few weeks. We stayed there many years ago in your parents house for a memorable holiday and wanted them to see it!
Best Wishes

Hi Beth what a lovely comment, and I know. So many people should be more at home with drawing, it's really important. At least you found solace in books. But drawing isn't really taught anymore in schools here, and nature study tends to be genetics and biochemistry. I fear there'll be a lot more people sharing your feelings.... And yes, I am deeply grateful to have been raised in an arty, nature-filled home. I am incredibly lucky. Thanks for your kind comments about my work x Lizzie

Love this post. Feel that people of my age (83) missed so much with the lack of nature study as children. Family moved a lot so just to adjust to the new was hard. Reading became my escape and rock. Wish I had discovered drawing then as we lived in interesting places with what I am now interested in drawing and learning about - plants, incredible variety. Creation is ever wonderful.
Your have a blessed heritage. Thank you for sharing your posts. They are a joy.

Hi Peter

I agree entirely. There were definitely problems with late Victorian education (not least that women were basically being trained to be "ladies" rather than to have fufilling jobs) but the way nature was taught does seem to be a really good approach. And, like you say, this relates to taking the time to observe and think. And yes, with my own kids, I see them racing through topic after diverse topic, being force-fed the relevant bullet points. How any child can relish the joy or exploration and learning in such a highly charged environment is a puzzle to me too. Thanks for your comment. Lizzie

Wikipedia has an excellent article on the family Viola well worth a look.

Good morning Lizzie, once again a very good blog post and your aunts work is a reminder of an age when students of all ages wrote their text in pen and ink.
Because it was pen and ink you had to give the matter some thought and take your time otherwise the page became a mess very easily.
By giving the writing of this text the time it deserved you took the information in, where as now my grandchildren(I am just retired) have inordinate amounts of work to consume and take in very little because they don't have the time to do so.
Apologies for this post but felt I had to express my views and admiration for your aunts work.

Hi Dwight, yes. And beyond that, what you say about when words fail is very true. I often think that drawing needs to be taught far, far more seriously at school. Not only does it appeal to kids who may not excel academically, but it also has massive mental health benefits. Its terribly trendy to talk about mindfulness right now, but the feeling of getting utterly lost in drawing, of focus and everything else falling away - I think it IS good for the soul, as well as a lovely thing to do. i agree with you. Ooh Helen, I'm super-jealous of the nature lessons you had! A year long study of a lilac and a sycamore? How wonderful! I rather wish there was more of that sort of education out there now, I think it might help re-attach people to the living environment around them at a time when we really need to be tuning in to nature on so many levels. Thanks for the encouragement, and for sharing your experience of nature lessons! Yours Lizzie
