Hey Lizzie, I know this a few years after you made these but I was wondering are there tips you would have for specifically conifers?
I don't mean to bother you or anything its just that I was looking for art references for my Leaving Certificate art piece and your work is actually perfectly what I imagined for the project.
Your attention to detail is really incredible and I was just looking for tips.
This message is a bit all over the place so sorry about this.
Thanks, Oisín

Hi Ginette

What a lovely message! I am so glad you've found a way to make art, and to make it work for you. I always think that when you draw, there's a stillness which is caused by the level of concentration. And in that stillness there's a sort of calm, of flow. I am not at all surprised this helped when your father was in hospice care. Being able to step out of the present, if just for an hour or so, must have been so helpful.

I'm also really glad you're enjoying the things you create! Yes, the tree illustration texture took a bit of time to sort out. Drawing in the leaves in pencil, then adding ink on top. It was realising that I didn't need to erase the pencil that was something of a eureka moment. Leaving those pencil marks added some substance to the leaf canopy. I really appreciate your feedback on this, it wasn't an easy thing to sort out. And I'm so pleased you've found it helpful in your treehouse illustration.

Good luck with all you draw, and all the art you create. It is so wonderful to be able to feel that, in some small way, I've supported a little bit of that journey. Thank you.

Yours

Good morning, Lizzie,
For most of my life, I dreamed of being able to draw or paint. To have the ability to create something on paper, to fill the times when my hands would otherwise have been idle.
Yet it wasn’t until my father was here at home, in the last few months of his life, on hospice that I discovered that I could actually draw something that might be beautiful in the end.
I’m not sure why suddenly what always seemed so difficult and stressful finally brought me peace. But, know that I’m thankful for the gift at no matter what level it actually is.
Currently, I’m working on a small fun piece… a little treehouse of sorts, and found myself struggling to fill out the canopy.
Everybody has their own style so I’ve discovered, and I wasn’t looking for an exact example, just some guidance, when I stumbled across your page.
Your trees are exactly what I was looking for! Enough structure, and form that you can tell that there are leaves on the trees, and yet enough looseness that one doesn’t have to spend a week or more drawing every leaf. It’s more of the essence of a tree’s canopy, than filling in every detail.
Thank you, dear heart for sharing your joyful art, so that some of us may feel inspired by your work, a key, that lets us move forward.

Thank-you. Thank-you.
If there was a way for me to show you what I am doing, I would gladly do so.

God bless you and yours,
I remain,

Hi Evie

That is so good to hear. A level art is a real challenge, and so is illustrating trees. I'm really glad my work is helpful. Im not sure if I embedded the following Youtube film of me inking up a tree in this video, if not here it is: https://youtu.be/DEPqRacGTTw

Good luck with your A level!

Yours
