We have this in Ohio and it’s like the Kudzu of the North. I have never seen flowers or berries on them, but I do break out in a horrible rash as though it was one of the Poisons. I’m dwaling with a rash right now.

Thank you for posting such a great detailed site. I was out under my eves hammering nails to train my young vine where to travel when some sap dropped in my eye. Now my eye itches like crazy and is red, and gooey. I wanted to look up the exact name of the vine so I can tell my doctor. I will sound like an expert now😊

Ah Renee, the perils of what other people grow before you get to your dream home! Ive not had bad reactions to any of the Virginia creepers, but I certainly know some people have. I am curious if the “false creeper” also causes a bad reaction? I just bought a house and I have either creeper or false creeper popping up in places. I had thought it would be a good native plant instead of the english ivy that has taken over. English ivy is at least not going to cause a reaction… but I will have to remove it anyway 🙁

My whole family has a reaction to touching it. An itchy rash that is very similar to poison ivy. We are all very allergic to it.

My virgina creeper did not bear berries. The leaves are turning red and it’s early August.

Oh now I’ve gone and confused myself. I did find it super-tricky untangling the two when I was illustrating them. But yes, the suckers vs unanchored tendrils is the main give away.
