In reply to Pete matthews. Hi Pete I don't know what midges you saw, but I do remember learning at University that midges will gather at a high point or prominent landmark. It becomes a lek, or a mating station. So maybe you saw a whole possee of love-lorn midges over the river! Thanks for the positive feedback, so glad to have been of help.

How absolutely wonderful! How clever you are. I was at a local river yesterday and spotted a whirlwind of midges about a metre above the water surface. Was fascinating watching them as if going around an oval race track. Thousands of them. My search for some identification led me to your drawings. Thank you.
